JAN PAINTING LIFE SIZE BISON FOR CHARITY

Bison being put into work area at Tri County Tech

Jan recently taught a seminar for artists at WOLF PARK. A wolf is put with a herd of healthy bison so that the interactions between the two species can be observed. The wolves are well fed and the bison strong so there is no danger to either. One of the perks ended up for Jan to be able to photograph close details of the bison for the Buffalo Stampede project, including hoofs, eyes, horns and hair texture! You can see Jan with some of the students in one of the trucks, simply closely observing these details of the bison.

Jan is mixing up the two different browns that she will paint on the bison.

Jan talked James into coming and helping her put the base coats on.

Fun and interesting painting unusual angles!

Jan has started work on "detailing" out the bison. She discovered this unusual "craft" brush at the local arts and crafts store and thought it would work wonderfully for creating the hair coat on the hump and head where it is longer than on the rest of the body.

Jan has done the hair texture of the hump and head, along with the horns.

Jan wanted to do the eyes very realistically Here is one completed.

Back in the studio Jan draws the first "scene" that is going on the right side of the bison. It will be some bison stampeding towards the viewer, kicking up dust.

Returning to Tri County Tech, Jan has taped the drawing to the bison in the position she wants and is now transferring it using white artists transfer paper.

Here the first "scene" has been started (the two bison on the right). The stampeding bison are kicking up a lot of dust so Jan blocked some in - although the area on the top will probably be toned down some.

A close-up shot of the first scene that has just been started.

This it the completed scene of the charging bison on the right side of the sculpture.

This is the drawing being transferred on the other side of the bison. This painting will depict a cow bison nursing a calf with the rest of the herd in the background.

Here's a closeup of Jan working on the new painting on the left side of the bison. It's hard to work on a "rounded" surface such as the "belly of a bison"! Notice some of the reference photos she is using taped on the sculpture.

Here is the finished painting on the left side. Jan has now completed the painting of the bison sculpture. It will now be taken to get a varnish coating. It will then be taken back to Tri County Tech to be installed. September 3 there will be a "grazing" party and an unveiling of the sculpture. For information on attending the grazing party contact Tiffany at Tri County Tech - tbruce@tctc.org.

Jan is making a presentation to a large crowd at Tri County Tech in preparation of unveiling the bison sculpture.

The sculpture is a big media hit - it was featured in two area newspapers including the front page of the BARTLESVILLE ENTERPRISE and a half page feature on page two of the main section of the TULSA WORLD. You can read the World article here:

Jan has agreed to paint a life size fiberglass bison as part of a project called "Buffalo Stampede" in Bartlesville. Fifteen businesses and individuals have sponsored a bison. A large portion of the proceeds will go to help Mary Martha Outreach Center www.marymarthaoutreach.com. The idea was conceived by a girl scout troop working on their gold badges. They wanted to do something for the community and the arts and so came up with this idea. Tri County Tech is the sponsor of Jan's bison - as their mascot is a bison. The bisons will be painted by area artists and installed all over Bartlesville and the surrounding area. Jan (being a naturalist and realistic painter) is planning on painting her bison's front end "realistically" and then each side of the bison will have scenes of the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve (20 minutes from Bartlesville) with herds of bison.

Jan uses a special brand of Acrylic called Chromocolour which is manufactured in Canada. Chromacolour has graciously agreed to provide all the paint for Jan for this project free of charge. Chromacolour International

Jan did some preliminary work on the bison during April, but the majority of the work began in May. At the top of this page Jan is posting photos of the "work" in progress and then the finished bison installed at Tri Country Tech.
