Giraffe:

Sunsets and sunrises are spectacular in Africa. Since Tanzania and Kenya sit right on the equator the sunsets are very brief and always about the same time - between 6-6:15 every morning and every evening. Here is a photo of Jan on her last trip to Tanzania at sunset. Notice she is wearing a heavy fleece. Many people who have never been to Africa are surprised to hear that often throughout the year it can be quite cool!

Every once in a while Jan does silhouette sunrise/sunset paintings. It is sort of a different "style" for Jan, but she loves these scenes so much, which are typical experiences during her trips to Africa, that she loves to depict them. Here she has started laying in the sunset colors. She tries to blend the colors into each other while the paint is wet - which is very difficult with quick drying acrylic! Notice the two reference photos that she is working from on the left.

Jan is still working on the sky. Adding more detail of the light coming through the edges of the clouds and the rain on the left.

The drawing on the tracing paper has been flipped back over, ready to transfer to the finished sky.

Here the drawing has been transferred to the painting surface.

Jan has begun doing the far off brush and tree line and the giraffe.

Work is progressing on the acacia tree with the weaver bird nests.

Here is the completed painting "GIRAFFE AT SUNSET". It is 11 x 14. Jan thought you'd enjoy seeing it in its frame, as the framing helps complete and set off the painting.
