Lions:

The camera deleted the first few "steps" - but - as you know if you've been following Jan's "Painting in Progress" she begins her painting with a drawing done to size on transfer paper. She then blocks in the background. She transfers her drawing to the surface and blocks in the cats in her gray/purple gesso. She then transfers the drawing.

Here she has "drawn" out the cubs haircoat with sepia colored paint. Paying attention to how the hair lies, which direction it goes and how it "breaks" over muscles.

Jan is applying a thin brown wash in sections, then she is rubbing it with a cloth to create a softness to the underpainting.

Here are the cubs with the rubbed brown wash done on both.

Jan has now begun to detail out the cubs. Here the face of one is almost completed.

The lion cub in back is completed and one in front is started.

This is the finished painting - "ROUGH AND TUMBLE" 11 x 14.
