LEWA WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY, KENYA

Art from the Trip

"FACE OFF"
Kori Bustards

It will probably come as a surprise that the first painting I've done from the Lewa trip are Kori Bustards! But as most of you know - I LOVE birds, and this is the first time I had seen displaying Kori Bustards. They are truly interesting birds - they are the heaviest flying bird in the world. The males put on this elaborate display by raising their tails and erecting their filament like neck feathers and also inflating their esophagus. The male in the front is approaching the male in the back which is submitting by deflating his neck.

"ALL IN A ROW"
White Rhino and Red Billed Oxpeckers

This is the second painting Jan has done from the Lewa Trip. This big bull white Rhino is named Juma. He was very cooperative, first walking slowly towards us, then standing for awhile as if posing as our cameras clicked away - and then he sank down to rest in the sand. While resting a flock of red billed oxpeckers flew in and landed on him.

I quickly sketched the scene, and James snapped one photo before the oxpeckers flew away. Here's a photo of me sketching Juma and then the sketch I did with the oxpeckers on him.
